Kefalonia is the third largest island in Greece and is situated off the west coast of the Peloponnesian Peninsula in the Ionian Sea. The island boasts an extensive and well-maintained road network which facilitates travel. There are a multitude of both large and smaller beaches, including the world-famous Myrtos Beach. The beaches in the southern portion of Kefalonia are mainly composed of fine sand, while those in the north feature smooth rocks. The picturesque seaside villages of Assos and Fiskardo, Myrtos Beach, and other attractions such as the Melissani Cave Lake, are all located a reasonable (and scenic) 45 to 75-minute driving distance from the villa. A short ferry ride from Argostoli to Lixouri affords a wonderful day trip to family-friendly Xi Beach. The island also has several well-known wineries offering tours and tastings. Mount Ainos, one of the highest peaks in the Ionian Islands, is a National Park containing the heart of Kefalonia’s biodiversity and includes hiking trails with stunning vistas overlooking both the sea and the neighboring islands of Zakynthos and Ithaka. There are many historical and archeological sites to explore as well, such as the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos, Assos Castle and the Venetian Castle of Saint George.
Kefalonia is easily accessible by air, as the recently renovated and expanded international airport (airport code EFL) receives flights from all over Europe and the UK, including direct flights from Athens International airport. In addition, there is a ferry boat service from mainland Greece to ports located on the eastern side of the island. Several car rental agencies are located at the airport and Aktaia Residence is just a 10-minute drive away.
In order to fully appreciate Kefalonia, guests are strongly encouraged to have access to an automobile. The Villa offers secure, off-street parking. The wonderfully sandy Ai Helis beach is a short walk from Aktaia Residence, and there are several superb beaches within a 10 to 15-minute drive. The capital city of Argostoli is a mere 15 to 20 minutes away, featuring a drive along a scenic coastal road. Three major supermarkets are within easy driving distance from the Villa, and the island is dotted with multiple smaller shops and grocery stores. Should one choose not to dine in at the Villa, there are many excellent restaurants and tavernas nearby.
